UK vs US Cover Smack Down 2015 [vote for your favourite covers]

(Testing has shown that this post does not work in the WordPress reader, so please click the globe to view the mobile page!)

Disclaimers:
– UK on the left, US on the right.
– I used random.org to pick a random year between 2005-2020. I did try from 2000 but back then covers weren’t uploaded online in high quality like they are now.
– The book will have been originally published in 2015, the cover may not have been.
– If any of this is wrong, blame Goodreads pls.

VOTING CLOSED
I switched the UK and US around above, so these results may be incorrect. Damnit.

I think the US cover is spectacular. It’s so modern, it’s hard to believe it’s from 5 years ago – if it was published today with the same cover, it would still be massively hyped and wouldn’t look out of place.

These are the same cover, but the colour choices are drastically different. The colour isn’t why I prefer the UK cover though – for some reason the choice to have full cover text disappeared in the US after book one, and I was really hoping that would be continued.

The colour palette, the gold, the font, YES. I have the US hardback but would absolutely buy the UK paperback for this gorgeous cover.

The UK cover is nice and fits in well with other contemporaries, but all I can concentrate on is the US cover because it is so ugly, but it would be so easy to fix that – center the text/stitching, change the tagline and author font, and change the background and stitching to a better colour scheme. It looks like an unfinished draft.

Unused space is one of my biggest pet peeves, so while the US cover is beautiful there’s a good third of the top that could have been used better.

I feel like everything is spaced out better and I always prefer to not see a tagline on the cover.

I stared at these very similar covers forever before finally picking the UK cover. Why? Because that random clip art bunny on the US cover is annoying me.

The colours pop and I love that! Plus the font is really cool. The UK cover looks strangely middle grade to me.

I really like both covers! But if I saw the US one in the shop I would definitely pick it up to look at all the characters, and then feel bad for holding it that long and not buying it, so I’d buy it. An excellent marketing strategy.

I love the old burnt book look, even if the sight of burning books feels more with sadness and fear.

Which was your favourite cover overall? I love the US cover of The Rest Of Us Just Live Here.

  1. I once had the cover of Ink and Bone with the butterfly and since butterflies are a theme on my blog I had to choose that. I found choosing between some of these hard though because with a bunch I didn’t care for either covers.

  2. this was a really fun post! Most of the time I like both the US and UK covers of books, but The Starless Sea is one book where I love the US cover and don’t really like the UK cover – which is an issue since I live in the UK. :/ I think my favourite cover out of all these is An Ember in the Ashes, the UK version. 🙂
