Wrap Up Post

The 200 Book 2020 Wrap Up Post [everything i read during a global pandemic while everything was on fire]

*movie voiceover guy* In a year like no other year… one non binary person… read a whole bunch of books and achieved basically nothing… but that’s okay… because they now have pet snails…

This is Lettuce on a cucumber slice. He is very smol.

The only thing I’ve really achieved this year is reading a whole bunch of books, and I am absolutely fine with that. Oh, this blog has done very well! I’m creeping up to 300 followers after starting it in June-ish, so that’s pretty cool.

I’m going to split this up into sections, which are:

~ Christmas In The Wilson House
~ Goodreads Year In Books
~ Book Genres and Ratings Pie Charts
~ Books That Made My Year
~ Biggest Disappointments
~ Most Listened To Songs
~ 2021 Goals

Christmas In The Wilson House

Christmas in a small house with a 5 year old was absolute chaos, as you would expect. I enjoyed it, but it was very tiring (I’m neurodivergent with sensory issues so by lunch time I was absolutely exhausted and went for a nap). I got some really cool presents though and found some time to colour! Some of the weird and wonderful things included:

~ A Burger Cushion
~ A Paint By Numbers of Tape Cassettes
~ A book of Gender Swapped Fairytales
~ Socks that say “I am surrounded by idiots”
~ A necklace that looks like an Acorn
~ A t shirt that says “Let’s Summon Demons”

Goodreads Year In Books

I think I expected a little more from Goodreads than I got, which was just my shortest / longest books and average rating. I thought it used to have more information than that?

I was surprised my average rating is 3.6, I thought it would be higher. The page count is no surprise though, I’ve bee favouring shorter books this year.

Books Genres and Ratings Pie Charts

Hopefully if you click on these they’ll be a bit bigger! I think I made really good choices in books this year, with over 100 4 and 5 star reads – despite DNFing 12 books.

Books That Made My Year

It’s so hard to narrow this list down to ten, but after a lot of thinking these are the books I could not stop thinking about long after I closed the final page:

Best Book Covers Of 2020

These are the book covers that really caught my eye in 2020, but I haven’t read all of them yet!

Biggest Disappointments Of 2020

While I’ve had a great year for 5 star reads, I also read quite a few books that I was eagerly anticipating, only to be seriously disappointed by the story.

The Lucky Ones by Laz Lawson – The aftermath of a school shooting, I thought that both of the POVs were awful, May was emotionally manipulative and Zach’s onlt interest seemed to be getting with May.

The Austen Girls by Lucy Worsley – I’m a huge fan of Lucy and have enjoyed her YA books before, but this book was senseless. I wanted beautiful dances and romance, but the balls barely lasted a page or two and the ending was unsatisfying.

All Your Twisted Secrets by Diana Urban – A bunch of teenagers in a locked room and one of them is the culprit gave me Saw meets Agatha Christie vibes, but this book was so slow, so boring and I guessed who did it within a couple of chapters.

Seasons Of The Storm by Elle Cosimano – I assumed that this book about people who are the living embodiment of seasons was a fantasy, but it was an urban fantasy. I was left with more questions that answers, and had to constantly remind myself if it was Jack or Fleur speaking.

The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes by Suzanne Collins – Yet again I am saying that this is 500 pages of Snow thinking about food, whining about being hungry, and eating food. That’s it. That’s the whole book.

Songs On Repeat in 2020

I could probably list 1000 songs, but these are the ones I remember the most:

2021 Reading Goals

Read… less? I read 200 books in 2020 and nearly hit a slump a few times, so for 2021 I’m dropping my goal to 100 and we’ll just see how many I end up reading!
Halve my TBR Jar – I have a TBR jar full of paper stars with the books I want to read written on them, I really want to complete that jar soon but even getting it down to half would be amazing.
Visit More Blogs – A big goal I have is to be more active than ever, if I can find the energy! I want to start visiting a few blogs a day to see what you’re all up to.
Re-Read More Books – I often neglect my loved books for shiny new ones, so I’m hoping to fit a few in somehow.
Start My Series Of Series – I wanted to start reviewing whole series of books, which will encourage me to actually finish reading some. I’m planning to start with the Rebel Of The Sands series!

      1. I just looked at my year in books on Goodreads and it was the same as it was last year for me. Yeah I’ve been using The StoryGraph but I can’t seem to get rid of Goodreads completely. I’m just so used to it and it’s easy to navigate now that I’ve gotten used to using it.

  1. Nice wrap up post. I haven’t done mine yet. Maybe I am thinking I will finish one more book before the clock strikes midnight to start off the new year. I like the pie charts you used.

I wanted to read Layoverland, but never got to it. We have The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but now I wonder if I will like it.

Good luck with your bookish goals. Happy New Year!

    1. Ooh you’ll have to read fast to squeeze an extra one in! I planned to finish my reading early this year so I could have a week break but now I’m sitting here twiddling my thumbs, I want to read! 😂

  2. Wow you read so many books! I thought Goodreads used to have more stats too in the Year in Books but I can’t remember what, I was disappointed there wasn’t much. Goddess in the Machine and Legendborn are on my TBR! I love the cover for Legendborn.

  3. I want that Tshirt you got haha! 😀 Also Lettuce is so cute. Okay I forget I came here to read about books 😛 I love this list, I am doing a similar one but will be in two parts as i really cannot compile everything in post! I have actually got Piranesi on my TBR, hoping to get round to it in 2021.

    1. I really had to cut everything down to squeeze it all into one post without people scrolling forever! I was originally going to post EVERY book I read this year, but decided to scrap that.

    1. I am actually on Storygraph! I’m planning to use it more in 2021, so it will be interesting to see that progress over the next year. Piranesi is so, so good, I’m still thinking about that book. And I cannot wait for the sequel to Legendborn!

  4. I used to have pet snails! So cute 🙂 I’m happy to see that many of the books that made your year are actually on my tbr. I should do something like what you’re doing (tbr jar) to help me get through the overwhelming mountain of to-reads. Enjoy Rebel of the Sands! Oh and I don’t have an end of the year wrap up, per se, but I do have a list of my favorite reads of the year. You can find it here: https://www.nbiblioholic.com/2020/12/these-are-few-of-my-favorite-things.html.

I’ll see you in the new year and I hope you have an incredibly amazing time ringing it in 🙂

    1. My TBR pile is insane, the jar only covers the physical books that I’ve had sitting around forever, on top of that I have all my newer books and my eBooks! I’ll see you in the new year and fingers crossed it’s an amazing one for us!
